(source: Sole24ore | SHRM.com | Online manager)
Italy, “a people of poets, artists, heroes, saints, thinkers, scientists, navigators and transmigators”, this is how the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (also known as Palazzo del Lavoro), built in Rome in 1938, summarized in its structural essence the characteristics of a people who after the war were about to change their face. Today in 2017, what is the identikit of the young Italian Millennial, increasingly European and at times international, what does he like, what does he think, what does he want?
Let's discover the 10 likes together:
- I like to travel.
A study by the Boston Consulting Group says so. The reaction to this statement is obvious: nothing new for those who don't like to travel! But no, travel is a real need. In Germany the right word to describe this impulse is "wanderlust": exploring new destinations and getting to know new cultures with a backpack. The numbers: 200 million young people, an annual tourism turnover of Millennials of about 180 billion, a growth of 30% since 2007.
Unstable future, precarious work, but travel is the only certainty.
- Like Facebook and Instagram.
Forbes reports the new use of social media, not only to share but also to find information, to organize a vacation or decide on a purchase.
In fact, 15% of young people are influenced by Facebook posts and 13% by Instagram.
- Enjoy the memorable experience.
Generation Y seeks authenticity. Telb Rifai, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, says that young travelers are eco-friendly, interact more closely with the communities they visit than the average tourist, to cement the memory of an unforgettable trip.
- He likes adventure.
They don't call it a vacation, but a journey, understood as a synonym for adventure. Young people need to know and discover, even if their wallets aren't full of savings, they plan their journey in advance and far from consumer destinations, towards unexplored paradises.
The Internet is their best ally in this.
- Like Good Work and Life Balance
9 out of 10 Millennials want to work to be appreciated socially and also to have fun with flexible hours and without a desk. The physical workplace is not recognized as the place where one can best express oneself professionally.
They measure their success by the output they produce, not by the number of hours they spend in the office.
- I like the “white”
It is the public aware of the most “black” events of recent years from the attacks on the Twin Towers to the massacres in Paris and Nice, from the bombings in airports to globalization. On the other hand, this generation has developed a strong tendency towards the culture of transparency and coherence. The Inc.com blog says that 64 % of Generation Y prefers to earn $40,000 a year for a job they love rather than $100,000 for one they hate.
Half of Millennials would never do a job they didn’t like.
- Enjoys working in a team.
88% prefers working with others, but it's not just teamwork! It's the shift from one-to-one competition to collaborative competition: this is the culture they want in companies.
- Like the feedback.
Let's not forget that it is the generation that has proliferated in the social media boom, accustomed to posting and receiving impromptu likes. Across the ocean we talk about "instant gratification", it is a generation that is not willing to wait to grow professionally, they go as fast as the world around them.
- I like being an entrepreneur.
Self-employment is very widespread among these young people, according to an article by Manager on line, “From millennials to Entrepreneurs”. The research conducted shows that 67% of Italians would like to become entrepreneurs against 63 % of France and 62% of Spain. 40% of the ideas of young Italians have e-commerce as their target reference.
Entrepreneurship is not a fallback solution for the lack of work, in fact 51% believes that this path guarantees independence, autonomy and innovation.
- It's nice to be heard.
The 65% of young people think that their boss does not know them at all and that they could learn from them. Strange reversal of roles, these young people feel like mentors of the older generations.
Millennials are looking to mentor older workers, especially when it comes to technology and how to get things done.
